Baking Soda - It’s not just for Cooking

Baking soda also known as Bicarbonate of soda is a common name that everyone would have heard despite their experience in cooking. It got its name because it causes dough to rise.

It has many uses other than cooking which people might be less aware of. Here are some of the other benefits.

1. Relieves Heartburn:

Heartburn is a burning sensation felt from the upper stomach to your throat. It is caused by overeating and eating spicy foods.

Mix a teaspoon of baking soda in warm water and drink it gradually. There is no need to drink a full glass. Drink slowly until the sensation reduces. Baking soda contains high sodium content which solves the problem.

Pregnant women and people with medical issues should not try this method due to its high salt content.

2. Whitens teeth:

Baking soda is used in many kinds of toothpaste since it can break the compounds that cause stains on the teeth. Once the chain is broken, the stains and odour go away.

It has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties which fight the germs on the teeth and can also give you relief from a toothache.

3. Neutralizes Odours:

Baking soda has the property of interacting with odour particles and breaks them to neutralize the scent. It can be used in refrigerators, shoes, garbages and even as a deodorant.

Pack two spoons of baking soda in a cloth and tie well. Place it in the source of the odour. It does not mask the smell; it gets rid of it.

4. Utensil cleaner:

Baking soda is a particularly good dishwasher that can clean any stain. If you have greasy food stuck on any utensil, add two tablespoons of baking soda to hot water and soak for a few minutes then wipe it well.

To clean a microwave oven, add two spoons of baking soda into a bowl full of water. Heat it for 3-5 minutes and wait for another 5 minutes. Later, open it, wipe off the humidity formed on the inner walls which removes the stains.

5. Floor cleaner:

Baking soda is one of the best natural floor cleaners which is highly competitive to the synthetic cleaners available on the market. It brightens and disinfects any floors, toilets, showers, bathroom tiles, and sinks.

To get the best result, make a paste with baking soda and water and wipe it over the floors, wait for 20 to 30 minutes and clean it off. You can do this once a month to maintain the new floor look.

Baking soda is a must-have in and around the house with many other properties which will be extremely helpful in times of need.
